People, Planet & Peace of Mind

Here at Ladies Landing, we care about your comfort, your health and the health of the environment. That is why throughout the process of renovating and furnishing this crashpad, we chose products that aligned with these values, even if it came with a higher price tag.

Ways We Care

For Your Health

Indoor Air Quality

the problem

“Americans, on average, spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations.”

- EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

our solutions

01

Reducing Possible Indoor Pollutants

The first step to providing cleaner air is to reduce the amount of harmful pollutants that could contamnate the space. Common pollutant sources such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are often found in cleaning products, mattresses, and typical furniture.

  • All of our cleanings supplies come from Blueland, a cruelty free certified company, and made without phosphates, ammonia, VOCs, and chlorine bleach.

  • We have an Avocado Vegan Mattress in every bedroom, which are certified Formaldehyde-Free, Greenguard Gold, and many others!

  • For furniture and decor, we tried to furnish with items that were third-party certified to be not harmful to human health, such as OEKO-TEX, Greenguard, and GOTS.

02

Indoor Plants

For those indoor pollutants that do make their way into the home, we use houseplants to absorb those toxins and clean the air. Indoor plants are considered to be natural air filters, and can help minimize human exposure to many harmful compounds.

Water Drops

Water Quality

the problem

Most tap water in the U.S. contains some harmful contaminants, such as lead, PFAS (forever chemicals), chlorine and microplastics. Even though water is regulated by the EPA, violations do occur. (ex. think Flint, Michigan; watch Dark Waters)

our solutions

01

Berkey Water Filter System

Although it is called a filtration system, the Berkey Filter is technically a water purifier because it is able to remove harmful contaminants from water. A few of the contaminants that Berkey targets are: chlorine, VOCs, pesticides, and heavy metals such as lead. For more, view Berkey's website.

Although Berkey has not done an official microplastic-specific test, based on their filters they predict that they drastically reduce the amount of microplastics that are typically found in tap water (read more here.) Bottled water is similar, considering many bottled water companies simply use tap water to fill their bottles. Research also suggests that the plastic bottles the water comes in could be leaching into the water. Not to mention the amount of water and oil needed to make the plastic bottles, and the environmental affects... (keep scrolling to see our environmental health section.)

Forest Path

the problem

Nature Deprivation

Nature Deficit Disorder: the idea that humans are spending less time outdoors than in the past, which is contributing to a range of mental and physical issues, like attention deficit disorders and obesity.

our solutions

01

Backyard

Recent studies have shown that spending time outside in nature has numerous health benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing your ability to focus. The backyard at Ladies Landing has five 50+ year old Live Oak trees on the property, and overlooks countless others in the greenbelt behind. This country like atmosphere offers all of the benefits of having access to outdoor space (which are important during a potentially stressful TDY) while still only being minutes away from Randolph AFB and downtown San Antonio!

02

Indoor Plants

During those hot summer months when spending time in the backyard isn't as desirable, you can get similar health benefits from the houseplants inside the home. In addition to producing clean air inside the home, having houseplants can boost your mood, productivity, and concentration. They also reduce stress and fatigue; all of which are important during a TDY!

Ways We Care

For the Environment

Sunrise over the Wheat Field

the problem

Overwhelmed Electrical Grid

Roughly 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States come from residential energy use. And over 80% of electricity in Texas comes from fossil fuels.

our solutions

01

Reducing HVAC

Air conditioning and heating account for as much as 46% of a typical home's energy usage in the U.S.. To help alleviate some pressure on the Texas utility grid and reduce the amount of energy this home consumes, the smart thermostat automatically adjusts the temperature depending on the time of day and the season.

02

Solar Panels

Reducing the amount of energy needed to power the home means we need to produce less or import less energy from the utility grid. Because of this reduction, the solar panels on the roof are able to produce more energy than the home consumes; making the house on track to achieve net zero energy this year!

Zero Waste Shopping Bags

the problem

Household Waste

The average American produces almost 5 pounds of trash per day, according to the EPA. Most of our trash comes from two rooms in the house, the kitchen and bathroom, and are from two major culprits: food waste and single use plastics.

The EPA estimates that more food reaches landfills than any other single material in American's everyday trash, constituting roughly 24% of municipal solid waste. As for plastic waste, in 2021 only 5% of plastic was recycled in America.

our solutions

01

Minimizing Food Waste

Problem continued: Many people believe that because food waste typically decomposes naturally that it will also in a landfill. But unfortunately, when organic materials break down buried under layers of waste and without access to light or oxygen, food cannot decompose properly. Instead it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Our solution:

  • We encourage our guests to reduce their food waste as much as possible, and support companies who are doing the same such as Imperfect Foods, who deliver "imperfect" groceries right to your door.

  • We provide options for both indoor and outdoor composting. Lomi is an indoor composter that turns your food waste into soil in a matter or hours! Learn more here.

02

In The Kitchen

  • We encourage our guests to bring their own shopping bags with them to the store, by providing both large carrying bags and smaller produce bags.

  • An Almond Cow is provided for our guests to make their own plant based milks and other goodies (view recipes here). This helps to cut down on kitchen waste, and is also healthier and cheaper too!

  • A Fellow Kettle paired with a reusable strainer have all of your tea or coffee needs covered

  • Blueland's zero waste tablets are used all throughout the home, for cleaning products, dishwasher and laundry detergent and hand soap

03

In The Bathroom

  • A bamboo toothbrush paired with Huppy toothpaste make for a perfect zero waste nighttime routine

  • Plaine Products provides shampoo, conditioner and bodywash in refillable metal containers

  • Your typical toilet paper roll needs more than 10 gallons of water to make just a single roll of toilet paper. So reduce water usage and give the bidet a try! Whether you decide to use the bidet or not, you'll need some TP. Over 1 million trees are destroyed every day just to make regular toilet paper. So we use Who Gives a Crap, which is made from bamboo, a more sustainable option due to its fast growth and less resources
